UNDERSTANDING   AUTISM

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex lifelong developmental disorder that affects how people experience and interact with the world around them. There is no single underlying cause for autism, but it is linked to a combination of environmental factors and genetics.

How does ASD affect people?

Autism affects each person who has it differently, hence it being a spectrum disorder. The ways in which people with autism interact, learn, and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others need less support or live entirely independently.

ASD in Media

A mostly inaccurate and negative portrayal of autism has been perpetuating by many books, movies, and shows. Recently, books and networks like Disney have debuted characters that have a more holistic and truthful

representation of the autism spectrum, but harmful portrayals of autism are still common in the media.

ABOUT THE CREATOR

Hi! My name is Claire Camacho, and as of 2020 I am a senior at Bainbridge High School. I like swimming, baking, and playing with my cats. My favorite subjects in school are chemistry and psychology. I made this site as part of my Girl Scouts Gold Award project because I am passionate about spreading a more nuanced and empathetic awareness of autism. Media and misinformation has developed such a negative and false image of people with ASD, which impacts their daily lives as well as those of their family and friends. I hope to help combat ignorance and misconceptions towards ASD and promote acceptance and unity.
